Peptide testing labs and what a report actually proves.
A certificate is only worth what its method section says. Here is what the common tests measure, what they cannot measure, and how to tell a real report from a decorative one.
The two tests that matter
HPLC, high performance liquid chromatography, separates what is in the vial and reports each fraction as a percentage. That is where a purity figure comes from. It answers how much of the sample is the main component and how much is something else.
Mass spectrometry measures molecular weight, which is how identity gets confirmed. It answers whether the main component is the compound on the label at all. Purity without identity is incomplete: a vial can be 99 percent pure something else.
A report with both is meaningfully stronger than a report with either alone. Most disputes come down to a certificate that has purity and no identity work behind it.
What a lab report cannot tell you
A certificate describes the sample the lab received. It says nothing about the rest of the batch unless the sampling is documented, and nothing at all about a different batch.
It also cannot tell you about sterility, endotoxin content or how the material was handled after testing. Those are separate assays and separate questions.
This is why the batch number is the single most important field. A report you cannot tie to the vial in front of you is a document about someone else's material.
Reading a report properly
Check the batch number on the report against the label. If they differ, or the report has no batch number, stop there.
Check the date. A report from two years ago describes a batch that is probably long gone.
Check that the lab is named and can be looked up. An unnamed lab, or a logo with no contact details, is not third-party verification.
Look at the chromatogram if one is included, not just the summary number. A clean single peak looks different from a main peak with shoulders, and the summary figure alone hides that.
Be sceptical of a flat 99.9 percent on every product from a seller. Real batches vary. Uniform perfection across a whole catalog is a formatting choice, not a result.
Independent testing versus supplier testing
A supplier can commission a test and still be honest about it, and many are. The question is whether the report comes from a laboratory that is separate from the seller and identifiable by name.
Buyer-commissioned testing exists too: you send a portion of your own vial to a lab and pay for the assay. It is the strongest form of verification available to an individual, because you control the chain of custody. It is also slower and costs more than most single orders.

Common questions
What does HPLC purity actually mean?
It is the percentage of the sample that the chromatography attributes to the main component. It tells you how much is not something else, but on its own it does not confirm that the main component is the labelled compound.
Why does mass spectrometry matter if I already have a purity number?
Purity says how much of one thing is present, identity says what that thing is. Without identity confirmation, a very pure sample of the wrong compound reads as a good result.
Does a certificate cover the whole batch?
Only to the extent the sampling is documented. A certificate describes the sample that reached the lab. It says nothing about a different batch, which is why the batch number has to match your label.
Can I get my own vial tested?
Yes. Independent labs accept samples from individuals. It is the strongest verification available because you control the chain of custody, though it costs more and takes longer than most orders.
What should make me suspicious of a report?
A missing or cropped batch number, no named laboratory, an old date, or an identical purity figure across an entire catalog. Real batches vary.
